Salif Keita - La différence - 2010

La Différence is the new work by the Malian musician Salif Keita, with which he closes the acoustic trilogy that began with Moffou (2002) and M´Bemba (2005). In it he wanted to denounce the discrimination suffered by albinos in Africa.

The album has been recorded on acoustic, for this he has surrounded himself with prestigious session musicians such as Keletigui Diabaté (balafón), an institution in Malian music, the Algerian Mehdi Haddab, from Speed Caravan (oud), the Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, Vincent Segal (cello), Mamadou Kone (percussion), as well as Kante Manfila and Djelly Moussa Kouyaté on guitars.

Many of the songs included have been recorded on the banks of the Niger River, in Djoliba, his hometown. "Folon" and "Seydou" (from his album Folon, 2007) are new versions, masterful, with a new air in the absence of synthesizers. They are also songs full of angelic choirs ("Ekolo d´Amour", "San Ka Na", "Djélé") thanks to the great singers who always accompany the maestro. Themes that make up an album of plural vibrations, a homogeneous set above which the voice of a singer who totally dominates his art rises majestically.

The message of this fantastic set of songs is clear: rescue African albinos through their Foundation "The Salif Keita Global Foundation", created in 2001. But not only that:

"In the difference lies beauty, unfortunately this does not apply to everyone. When I launch this message in my songs, it is clear that I am addressing all those who have a difference, the deaf, the blind, the lame ... or even the whites who feel black, and also to the gays who in Africa are persecuted for their homosexuality. Rachid Taha - Bonjour

Rachid Taha (رشيدطه, in Arabic; Sig, Oran, September 18, 1958) is an Algerian singer.

He proposes an emblematic music of the tendency to mix the classes and cultural traditions characteristic of world music. The latter in different musical genres such as raï, techno, rock. He creates an inventive and original musical speech to the beat of his albums. In addition, his hoarse and raspy voice offers a very modern take on contemporary raï. He brings together, in 1997, all his hits under the title CarteBlanche before mentioning, between a respectful approach and technological contributions, his Algerian roots with Diwan, an album of resumes of great classics of Arabic song.

In 2014 he became famous in Spain by singing along with India Martínez the main theme of the film 'El Niño'

Quinteto Violado - Quinteto Violado - Brasil - 1972

This is the group's debut album, recorded and released in 1972. The original edition of the vinyl LP had a special mix on "Asa Branca", where the bass stood out and this became a kind of "brand" for the group.

The album was not reissued for 30 years, becoming a "cult".

In 2003 Universal Music released a CD version which soon sold out.

To the admirers of the "Quintet" who didn't get their copy, I dedicate this post.

QUINTETO VIOLADO is an instrumental-vocal ensemble organized in 1970, in Recife PE, which is characterized by the interpretation of northeastern music and research on Brazilian folklore. Initially formed by Toinho (Antônio Alves, Garanhuns PE 1943), singing and acoustic bass; Marcelo (Marcelo de Vasconcelos Cavalcante Melo, Campina Grande PB 1946), singing, viola and guitar; Fernando Filizola (Limoeiro PE 1947); Luciano (Luciano Lira Pimentel, Limoeiro PE 1941), percussion, and Sando (Alexandre Johnson dos Anjos, Garanhuns, 1959), flutist, in the 1990s became part of Toinho, acoustic bass, composer, singer and musical director of the group ; Marcelo, guitarist, guitar player, singer and composer; Ciano (Luciano Alves, Garanhuns PE 1959); Roberto Menescal (Roberto Menescal Alves Medeiros, Garanhuns PE 1964), singer and percussionist; and keyboardist and arranger Dudu (Eduardo de Carvalho Alves, Recife PE 1970).

He performed for the first time, still without the name that made him famous, in January 1970, at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Federal University of Pernambuco. In October 1971, when he performed at the Teatro da Nova Jerusalem (Fazenda Nova PE), his members were called "the violated", giving rise to the Quinteto Violado. Gilberto Gil introduced them to producer Roberto Santana, from Phonogram, and the appearance of the set was praised by CaetanoVeloso.

Pantsula! - The Rise of Electronic Dance Music in South Africa - 1988 - 90

Kwaito is a genre embedded in the blood and bones of South African music lovers. Taking its inspiration from the rhythms of slow motion, the kwaito became the sound of a generation and a well-received musical innovation after the apartheid regime.

The genre not only helped to unify a nation, but also gave rise to its own physical expression in the form of the "Pantsula" dance. 20 years later, kwaito and Pantsula have become a kind of lost art. But its resurgence has excited many dance music fans, and 2017 seems to be the year of the rise of South African dance music culture.

The 12 tracks selected for Pantsula! they come from a very unique time and place, very different. They represent the birth of electronic dance music in South Africa, through the songs of a particular independent label of the time: MusicTeam. The sound represents the culmination of the bubblegum era, when South African disco artists overcame their American influences and forged an increasingly electronic and "local" pop sound.

Evolving in time from long before the 1980s, Pantsula's distinctively South African subculture is more closely associated with a distinctive attitude, style, and dance, rather than a specific sound. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Pantsula was also the name given to a new kind of dance music taking to the streets of South Africa, influenced by the earlier bubble gum and the rise of Shangaan Disco, but with an appeal. much wider and harder, purely electronic sound

Omar Sosa - Mulatos - 2004

Omar Sosa, an exceptional Cuban musician and pianist, masterfully recreates the fusion of rhythms from his African roots with elements of Cuban popular music, jazz, and using elements of electronics or hip hop sounds in his recordings and live performances. .

In Mulatos (2004) he continues to count on the collaboration of musicians from different cultures such as DhaferYoussef (oud), Steve Argüelles (percussion, electronics), Dieter Ilg (double bass), Philippe Foch (tabla), Renaud Pion (clarinet), and Paquito D 'Rivera on clarinet, one of Omar's great idols. In 2006, Mulatos Remix was released, a refreshing rereading of Mulatos where it incorporates new sounds. L’Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio - Sona - 2006

Since their first concert in 2002, closing the Romaeuropa Festival, the members of L´Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio (from Hungary, Ecuador, Tunisia, Morocco, India to Senegal, Cuba and Argentina) have transformed their roots and cultures into a single language, music. The Orchestra is inspired by the history of each artist, proposing a brilliant mix of folk with sounds of rock, pop, reggae, spiced with original instruments, memories, remote melodies and voices from far away places. A fresh and energetic sound that presents Rome as one of the cultural and musical crossroads of the world.

The Orchestra was born from an idea by Mario Tronco and the filmmaker Agostino Ferrente around the area of the homonymous square, where most of the inhabitants are immigrants, and is developed with the Apollo 11 Cultural Association, a project of artists, intellectuals , professionals and residents of the Esquilino district of Rome in order to promote interculturality in an area. Its staging offers a powerful message of brotherhood and peace in a way that no other statement, meeting or television debate is capable of. But beyond its political and social value, L'Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio promotes the investigation and integration of various musical repertoires that are often unknown to the general public, contributing, at the same time, to the improvement of isolation conditions. cultural and social that many of the artists often have to endure.

A wonderful anomaly in the polluted sea of pop music that cannot be pigeonholed into a specific category. L´Orquesta di Piazza Vittorio is a "product", without an objective. Music that manages to be free and structured, at the same time, linked to tradition but open to the future. Music for everyone and for everyone.

Habib Koité & Eric Bibb - Brothers in Bamako - Blues - Mali - Usa - 2012

The charismatic Malian singer and guitarist Habib Koité and the American bluesman Eric Bibb unite their traditions and virtuosity in Brothers in Bamako, a "transatlantic blues" that unites the music of Mali with the American blues tradition.

Habib Koité is one of the best trained and versatile musicians in Mali, with a charismatic and endearing voice and an enviable "griot" lineage. Eric Bibb is an African American bluesman raised in a heritage where folk and gospel also had a lot to contribute to his musical language.

Beyond the fact that their respective cultural and family traditions already predestined them to understand each other, the encounter between the two transcends origins and ancestors to draw a panorama of perfect contemporaneity. And the vehicle has been a work with an unpremeditated simplicity of approach: thirteen songs presented strictly acoustically, warmly bathed in their voices (alternating in a fraternal way) and subtly wrapped in the wonderful aromas offered by the local percussion of Mali (when they are not the ones who carry the rhythm by beating the wood of their guitars).

A sincere will to understand and the existence of common references make musical communication flow in a rich and natural way. Beautifully performed tracks like "On My Way To Bamako", "L.A." and "Nani Le", and versions such as "Blowin´ In The Wind" by Bob Dylan (based on banjo and ukulele), or "Foro Bana" (a Timbuktu blues that Koité had already recorded with his group Bamada in 1998) , make the album a delight for the ears.

Family Atlantica - Family Atlantica - 2013

Family Atlantica (2013) is the story of an encounter, when an unthinkable mix of energies, influences and sounds from three continents bathed by the Atlantic, decides to connect to end up recording an album as genuine as it is risky and surprising. An album that evokes the legacies of the Cuban son, the calypso and the deepest Venezuelan folk tradition (Afro percussion and peasant singing) along with Ghanaian higlife, Ethiopian blues, spiritual jazz and psychedelia.

The genesis of Family Atlantica happened four years ago, when the Londoner Jack Yglesias, multi-instrumentalist and producer who has already made history with the jazz project TheHeliocentrics, meets the Venezuelan poet and singer Luzmira Zerpa. They become a couple and when they begin their musical collaboration, the African percussionist Kwane "Natural Power" Crentsil (half Nigerian half Ghanaian) appears, passionate about percussion without borders. Added to the undeniable talent of this trio is the contribution of the Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke (piano), three generations of the Zerpa family, the Senegalese griot Nuru Kane (guembri) and the Afro-Cuban combo Yoruba Andabo. Four seasons of rehearsals later, finally sees the light that for the Critics, Manu Chao included, will be one of the albums of the year: his debut, simply titled Family Atlantica.

The charm of the album, recorded between London and Venezuela (Barquisimeto, Sanare and Tacarigua), lies in its multiplicity of sounds, rhythms and musical frequencies: there is Cuban rumba, Venezuelan tune, highlifeghaniano, son, Ethiopian blues and calypso. But no less important is its authenticity, tradition in tune with the present, pleasant doses of nostalgia and sound renewal, the kind to which we are accustomed by the great works that have managed to reinvent the old schools.

Eleni Karaindrou - L' Africana - Grecia

Eleni Karaindrou. Her music is a soft flow towards the beauty that is always beyond pain and suffering. It is a river with calm and transparent waters that takes us, from backwater to backwater, along that one-way trip that is life. Diving into that river, letting yourself be carried away by those calm waters, is a sensual and mystical experience. Everything in Eleni Karaindrou's music is beauty, harmony, poetry… and silence.

Born in Teichio, a small Greek mountain village, in 1939, after having studied archeology, history and musical composition in Athens, she moved to Paris to study ethnomusicology and orchestration. Her work has focused, almost always, on musical creation for film and theater, a field in which she has collaborated with geniuses such as Harold Pinter. Musicians like Jan Garbareck often accompany her in her performances. The world of opera has also attracted her strongly, having composed one of it about the world of Greek tragedy: The Trojans. In 1984 she met Angelopoulos and began that fabulous musical career that has led her to create some of the most beautiful Original Soundtracks in film history. His music and the images of Angelopoulos form an indissoluble one, a one where the light of twilight and dawn lives, that of fog, that of night and, above all, that atavistic light that is born within us and that illuminates our eternal journey between birth and death.

Africando - Viva Africando - 2013

Africando is a famous and legendary group born in Senegal, an inescapable reference of the so-called "African sauce". Made up of artists from Africa, as well as New Yorkers and Puerto Ricans, the band was created as a musical project in the early 1990s and celebrates the African tradition of salsa music. Seven years after his last production, Ketukuba (a work that emphasizes the links between Cuba and Africa), Viva Africando (2013) is his eighth production, for the London label Sterns Music.

The history of this album is quite an odyssey. While Africando's first seven albums were mostly or entirely recorded in New York, for this eighth album New Yorkers had to travel to Paris. That was not the initial plan, but the war in Mali intervened, making it impossible for the arranger and musical director, Boncana Maïga, to renew his visa to the United States. Fortunately, he was able to go to France, although the first tracks were recorded in Bamako (Mali) and Dakar (Senegal). In Paris he reconnects with Ibrahima Sylla, producer and mastermind of Africando (who passed away at the end of the production), and in November 2012 they are joined by the six New York musicians, led by pianist Oscar Hernández, who has been a integral part of Africando desde Gombo Salsa (1996)

Many familiar voices adorn Viva Africando. Veteran Senegalese singer Medoune Diallo, founding member of the band. SékoubaBambino, one of Guinea's great stars from her youth at Bembeya Jazz National, who joined Africando in 1996 and remains a permanent member while continuing her successful solo career. Roger Eugène, better known as Shoubou, a patriarch of the prominent Haitian band Tabou Combo, which has combined with his participation in Africando for seventeen years. A pioneer of modern music in Burkina Faso, Amadou Ballaké, appearing for the fourth time in a production of the band.

Jos Spinto, who has participated in Africando in the last decade, dedicates one of the songs to Gnonnas Pedro, a music star in his home country, Benin, who was the lead singer of Africando between 1995 and 2004, the year of his death. . Pascal Dieng, from Dakar's Super Cayor, repeats with a second album with Africando, as does his compatriot, the Senegalese singer Bassirou Sarr of the group Dieuf-Dieul.

This album features four prominent artists who made their first appearances with Africando: René Cabral, on the Cape Verdean music scene for three decades; Lokombe Nkalulu, a member of one of the best Congolese bands of the 70s, Les Grands Maquisards; James Gadiaga, a notable of the Senegal´s Royal Band of Thiès, and Raymond Fernandes, born in Dakar and of Cape Verdean origin, who recorded his theme but who passed away before the release.

Africando has always received great artists both on stage and in the studio, not only singers but also instrumental soloists. Viva Africando has a thrilling ending with a song performed by a guest orchestra: The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, under the direction of Oscar Hernández and with singer Ray de la Paz. Today's classic salsa greats, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, paying homage with "Africa Es" to their great ally in the cause, Africando.
