Anouar Brahem - Conte de L'incroyable Amour - 1992

In October 1991 Anouar Brahem recorded his second album for ECM, Conte de L'incroyable Amour. And although this album and its predecessor still have a typical traditional atmosphere, we can already see the different musical directions that our oud master could take. Anouar in his youth was not limited to listening to Arab music, he did not hesitate to explore other parts of traditional music: from the Mediterranean, to the most remote, on the border of Iran and India. For this work Anouar Brahem hired the services of the Turkish musician Kudsi Erguner Sufi teacher of the Mevlevi Emeritus flute player of the nai instrument traditionally used in trance ceremonies for dancing dervishes. Another Erguner compatriot, clarinetist Barbaros Erkose and again Tunisian Lassad Hosni on percussion (darbuka and bendir).

Calypso - Vintage Songs From the Caribbean - 2002

Calypso (2002) is a Putumayo collection that includes Calypso classics and popular songs from the golden era of Caribbean music.
In the 1950s, calypso and other Caribbean folk styles had international repercussions, after the release of "Calypso" by Harry Belafonte in 1956, one of the best-selling records in history. From then on, artists from Barbados, Trinidad, the Bahamas, Jamaica and other Caribbean islands became interested in this new audience. Thus, the rhythms, catchy melodies and double meaning lyrics of Caribbean music reached millions of North American homes.

This album brings us a selection of classics from the legendary ART Records, as well as other gems from various periods of Caribbean musical history. Calypso goes back half a century, to a romantic era that seemed to have been lost in time.

Brian Keane & Omar Faruk Tekbilek - Fire Dance - 1990

Omar Faruk Tekbilek, one of the main representatives of oriental music, has more than a dozen albums to his credit, and the album Fire Dance (1990) is one of the most applauded in his career. Second album of his international career, it was his second production with Brian Keane (famous composer and musician who ventures into the music of esoteric, Celtic and Tibetan veins) after his celebrated debut with Süleyman The Magnificent (1988), soundtrack of the movie of the same title.

This album can be interpreted as a natural progression from Süleyman, Faruk and Keane's experimentation with instruments from the Middle East and North Africa along with guitars, synthesizers and sophisticated orchestrations, expanding their attention from Turkey to include music from North Africa, Egypt and other Arab and Middle Eastern sources, without distancing himself from the styles that marked and shaped his career in its beginnings, such as Zingara or Sufi music.

Miriam Makeba - Mama Africa the very best of - 2001

Makeba began singing in the 1950s with the Manhattan Brothers group, after which she founded her own band, The Skylarks, which mixed jazz with traditional South African music. In 1963, the South African government banned all of her records and prevented her from returning to the country. She lived abroad for almost 30 years, in the United States, Europe and Guinea, until in 1990 Nelson Mandela, after her release, convinced her to return.

Miriam Makeba was the first African woman to win a Grammy in 1965. Two years later, she achieved international fame with the “Pata Pata”, a song inspired by a dance in the Johannesburg shanty town. In 2001, she was awarded the Otto Hahn Peace Prize, awarded by the German UN Association. In 2002 she was awarded the Polar Music Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

Ry Cooder - Chicken Skin Music - Usa

Ry Cooder has always believed in "reciprocity in music", and this could not be more evident in his career than with his fifth album, Chicken Skin Music (a colloquialism from Hawaii, synonymous with goosebumps). Even more than usual, Cooder refuses to recognize geographic or musical boundaries by presenting "Stand By Me" as a gospel song with a northern arrangement, or Jim Reeves' country-pop classic, "He'llHave to Go , "with the rhythm of a bolero, the interaction of Flaco Jiménez's accordion and Pat Rizzo's alto sax. On other tracks, two of Hawaii's great guitarists and singers Gabby Pahinui and guitar master Atta Isaacs on Hank Snow's hit "Yellow Roses" and the beautiful instrumental "Chloe". If Cooder's approach to music is stylistically diverse, his choice of material certainly follows suit. Sustained by a couple of Leadbelly compositions, Chicken Skin Music is a collection of songs ranging from the aforementioned themes as an ancient minstrel shows the medicinal "I Got Mine" and the syncopated R&B "Smack Dab in the Middle ". Blind Appalachian composer Alfred Reed also participates in "Always Lift Him Up", featuring a Hawaiian gospel tune, "kanaka Wai Wai" woven into the instrumental section. As he explains in the album notes himself, Cooder understands the connection between these seemingly disparate styles. This is nothing more than eclecticism for its own sake. Chicken Skin Music is probably RyCooder's most eccentric recording since its inception, but it's also one of the funniest.

Umalali - The Garifuna Women´s Project - 2008

Umalali (which means “voice”), edited in 2008, is part of the project to disseminate the Garifuna culture of musician Andy Palacio and Belize producer Ivan Duran, where the leading role is that of the women - who put their voices - from “ The Garifuna Women's Project ”. The gestation of the record work spanned ten years. Its producer, Iván Durán, invested the first five in touring the various countries where some vestige of Garifuna culture is preserved, observing traditional festivals and ceremonies and going to their houses to hear them sing in their everyday environment. He discovered, he explains, not only voices of extraordinary beauty but also the strength and courage of those anonymous women who are the main responsible for spreading the history of their people through their songs. It took five more to capture all that richness on an album and manage to match the essence of those traditional voices and rhythms with the contemporary air of Durán's own arrangements.

The tour of the different countries with a Garifuna population is clearly perceived in the various themes, as well as the variety of influences of this culture. Traditional percussions are mixed with the sounds of the strings of the jarana, with the African rhythms and with the Caribbean rumba, especially highlighting the impressive voices of the women, sometimes torn, sometimes sweet and mellow, but always charged with emotion and feeling.

Ebo Taylor - Yen Ara - 2018 - Ghana

Ghanaian legend Ebo Taylor returns with perhaps his best album to date. But don't take our word for it. That comes directly from the man himself. And he should know after more than 60 years in business.

Listen to Yen Ara and you won't just hear the high-energy afrobeat, sweethighlife, jazz, and konkoma influences he's famous for. There is also a disco pulse and strong percussion on the tracks, produced by Justin Adams (Tinariwen, Rachid Taha, Robert Plant) and recorded in the Electric Monkey Studio room in Amsterdam. An Ebo Taylor for these times, you might say.

His group, Salt Pod City Band, are all chosen local musicians who present two of their children. A proper lineup on an album whose titles mean "we". And they're in good shape, ripping tracks like 'Krumandey' (a sure-fire party starter) and 'Mind Your Own Business' (a simple message delivered over a frenetic drum beat).

Furthermore, 'AboaKyirbin' will please fans of afrobeatgrooves, while Taylor might be inciting riots at his next gig with 'Mumudey Mumudey', we hear him call for 'preshaaah' and it brings us to a call and response like la trumpet takes us higher. And the raising of those horns in 'Ankoma'm' evokes some of his best work such as 'Love & Death' and 'Come Along', the latter recorded with the Pelikans and featured in a recent Mr Bongo reissue.

Souad Massi - Meskelil - 2005

Mesk Elil, published at the end of 2005, is the result of the artistic and cultural baggage wisely combined and enriched by the maturity of the years. For his recording he had outstanding contributions from some musicians such as his faithful guitarist Jean François Kellner, the percussionist Mino Cinelu or the Maltese guitarist Djely Moussa Kouyaté (who accompanied Salif Keita). Ismael Lô, Pascal Danaé, Rabah Khalfa and DabyTouré also collaborated, as well as instrumentalists, with their voices, forming the respective duets with Souad Massi. This select diversity turns the album into a mixture of traditional and current airs that travels from the lands of the Tuareg to the warm Antillean rhythms, providing wealth and quality. A wonderful album where his roots and his passionate mysticism are allied in a moving way in an act of sensitivity and honesty available to few.

As for the lyrics of his songs, most of them written by Souad herself, all of them give off a certain nostalgic tone that does not detract from their beauty. In many of them he remembers his native land from such symbolic things as the intense aroma of the jungle mother that perfumes the Algerian nights (the magnificent "meskelil"); He also dedicates other songs to the memory of some places from his childhood, or to expressing the pain caused by the distance of his loved ones, or he makes an affirmation of identity such as "miwawa", a song he sings with the Mauritanian Daby Touré and in which they proclaim together the desire not to lose their roots. In short, they are songs of exile, an expression of crossed feelings of love for his land and sadness for everything that led him to get away from it.

Mesk Elil is an album full of nuances and influences and, above all, an opportunity to enjoy the deep and captivating voice of this beautiful, generous, sensitive and moving woman, who is overflowing with talent and humanity.

Hasna el Becharia - Djazair Johara - 2001

Hasna el Becharia is a committed, free-spirited and non-conformist woman. An artist born in southern Algeria who, from a young age, felt the need to go against the current and defend, with her music and her courageous attitude, the rights of women in Algeria and the Sahara. Heir to a lineage of Gnawa musicians, her first rebellious step was to learn, hidden, to play the guembri, a string instrument of Gnawa origin reserved only for men. The next, to bring to life music of extraordinary rhythms accompanied by acoustic and electric guitar, inviting, with the traditional sounds of gnawa, to enter in transit, interpreting popular songs and personal compositions.

After thirty years of career, Hasna's first album, Djazair Johara (2001), full of fast-paced rhythms so typical of the Maghreb and the Sahara, has a strength close to what rock could be. The instrumentation is simple but vibrant and the choirs impressive; the content, all a claiming song.
