Armada con banjos, violines, guitarras, harmónicas, jarras, kazoos, cucharas y otros varios "instrumentos" de percusión, Carolina Chocolate Drops revisa la "old time music" de los años 20 y 30 del siglo XX con el ánimo de los más enérgicos hip-hop y la perspicacia de los pioneros de este folk, fieles a la tradición pero sin dejar de expresar sus inquietudes artísticas de forma particularísima.

Carolina Chocolate Drops se formaron después de que sus miembros iniciales Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens y Justin Robinson coincidieran en el Black Banjo Gathering en Boone, Carolina del Norte, en 2005, siendo formados en el estilo del banjo de Piedmont y en su tradición musical (old time) bajo la tutela de Joe Thompson quien, a los 90 años, es una leyenda viva de la época dorada de las string band de Piedmont. Desde entonces, son de los pocos grupos afroamericanos especializados en la "old time music", género folk norteamericano con raíces en el folk irlandés, escocés, inglés y africano.

Los miembros de Carolina Chocolate Drops provienen de diversos orígenes musicales. Flemons es autodidacta en música tradicional norteamericana gracias a su prodigiosa colección de discos y a su inmenso conocimiento de los diferentes estilos del blues, country y las tradicionales string band. Giddens, además de su trabajo con Joe Thompson en su Piedmont natal, se formó en ópera en el Oberlin Conservatory, habiendo participado en una banda celta y sumergiéndose como bailarina antes de unirse al trío. Robinson, violinista del grupo, también toca el banjo, y se educó en una casa llena de artistas (su madre es cantante de ópera de formación clásica y cellista; su hermana, una pianista clásica, y su abuelo tocaba la armónica).

Después de su primer disco de estudio Dona Got a Ramblin’ Mind (2006), con Heritage (2008) siguen buceando en la tradición musical, en los estandars de la "old time music". Ragtime, blues y gospel se dan la mano en este projecto, la música mas profunda a base de un trio con mucha vitalidad y actitud.

Desde hace veinte años, el soul ha ido cobrando cada vez más fuerza en todo el mundo. Lo que comenzó denominándose "música racial" en tono peyorativo, ha traspasado fronteras y entre ellas la racial. Muchos de los nuevos grupos o solistas blancos no sólo lo practican sino que reconocen al rhythm and blues como única fuente de inspiración.

Todas y todos conocemos a los grandes: Otis Redding, The Supremes, Sam Cooke, The Temptations... pero éste es un género que se nutre, en gran medida, de voces casi anónimas. Canciones que pasaron casi desapercibidas para el gran público y que con los años -y en nuevas versiones, casi siempre de artistas blancos- obtuvieron el éxito internacional.

Soul Classics es precisamente eso. Una recopilación de 28 grandes clásicos del soul (ripeados de la edición original, por Dro en 1991, en LPs). Auténticas joyas que triunfaron hace más de cuarenta años y que, además, continuamente se incorporan al repertorio actual de nuestra música. Quien habló de la "fuente inagotable de recursos" estaba pensando en la música soul.

Eleni Karaindrou. Her music is a soft flow towards the beauty that is always beyond pain and suffering. It is a river with calm and transparent waters that takes us, from backwater to backwater, along that one-way trip that is life. Diving into that river, letting yourself be carried away by those calm waters, is a sensual and mystical experience. Everything in Eleni Karaindrou's music is beauty, harmony, poetry… and silence.

Born in Teichio, a small Greek mountain village, in 1939, after having studied archeology, history and musical composition in Athens, she moved to Paris to study ethnomusicology and orchestration. Her work has focused, almost always, on musical creation for film and theater, a field in which she has collaborated with geniuses such as Harold Pinter. Musicians like Jan Garbareck often accompany her in her performances. The world of opera has also attracted her strongly, having composed one of it about the world of Greek tragedy: The Trojans. In 1984 she met Angelopoulos and began that fabulous musical career that has led her to create some of the most beautiful Original Soundtracks in film history. His music and the images of Angelopoulos form an indissoluble one, a one where the light of twilight and dawn lives, that of fog, that of night and, above all, that atavistic light that is born within us and that illuminates our eternal journey between birth and death.
