Art Blakey - Dr. John & David 'Fathead' Newman - Bluesiana Triangle I - 1990

Three great veterans combine efforts on this recording for an album of blues-oriented staple material. In a classic jam session format, Art Blakey, Dr. John and David "Fathead" Newman join forces in a fun and diverse gathering of three virtuosos.

Bluesiana Triangle was an American jazz, blues, and funk group, featuring Dr. John (keyboards, guitar, vocals), David "Fathead" Newman (saxophone, flute), and Art Blakey (drums). They released two albums for Windham Hill Records. Their second album also featured trombonist Ray Anderson, drummer Will Calhoun (who replaced Art Blakey, who had died prior to the recording session for the second album), bassists Essiet Okon Essiet and Jay Leonhart (on different tracks) and percussionist Joe Bonadio, The resulting music again justifies the name, blues played in a funky Louisiana style with plenty of room for extended jazzy solos. Although much of the material was written by Dr. John and he sings from time to time, this is not a conventional Dr. John vocal album.

For the Windham Hill Jazz label, this album offers a fresh and powerful perspective on the blues genre, which some may feel has stalled. This group has breathed new life and excitement into music while remaining true to its roots. Bluesiana Triangle is an excellent and diverse collection from an equally excellent and diverse group of musicians who came together to celebrate the styles they know.

Bluesiana Triangle is an album by Art Blakey, as well as the name of the short-lived American jazz, blues and funk group that recorded it, consisting of Blakey (drums), Dr. John (keyboards, guitar, vocals) and David "Fathead" Newman (saxophone, flute).

After Blakey's death, the group released a second album, featuring drummer Will Calhoun (who replaced Art Blakey), trombonist Ray Anderson, bassists Essiet Okon Essiet and Jay Leonhart (on different tracks), and percussionist Joe Bonadio.

Tuff Lion - Ten Strings - Islas Vírgenes - Caribe - 2008

Tuff Lion is an artist, himself, who could well be described as a ‘modern classic’. The very fact that you and I are existing in a frame of life which happens to not only coincide with this man’s own, but this man making music at the height of his powers is something really special. Long a fixture on the Virgin Islands Reggae scene, the Lion has played for just about every remotely prominent and gifted Reggae artist from out of the VI as a producer, a musician, an arranger, a writer and pretty much just everything you could want. In 2007, the master guitarist from out of St. Croix released his very own debut album, the very well received ”Utterance”, which actually featured him taking things to the mic and singing throughout the very strong affair. The very next year, however, he outdid himself and did so in the most natural and organic way that he possibly could without uttering a single syllable on one of the finest albums the region has ever produced. “Ten Strings”

On an album like this, besides the quality of a particular sound and song (which is unquestionable in this case), everything is left to the individual perceiving that sound. What I mean is that, when I analyze these songs, where there’re no lyrics, I’m likely (and hopefully) to get something out of them which you won’t and which Tuff Lion didn’t when he made the songs. The album was pushed by I Grade Records, and was, essentially, Tuff Lion’s own musical efforts on some of the riddims from I Grade - Basically placing music where there is generally lyrics. The results were outstanding and probably pretty difficult to analyze. I think I’ll try it anyway.

Nahawa Doumbia - Kanawa - 2021

Cecile Corbel - Vagabonde

After the album La Fiancée, a baroque album released in 2014, Cécile Corbel delivers an album that she describes as "lighter, catchier, more cheerful". It goes back to the original etymology of folk: popular. A record where of course there are complaints that make you cry, but also work songs or songs to dance and share. Vagabonde is thus melodic, carefree, open. For this album, the harpist, singer, composer, traces the thread of folk in a very modern way, in thirteen songs, with guests: young French groups like Poppy Seeds or The Moorings, inspired by Irish pubs and Pogues. ; the Scots, Manran, invited to a suite of Irish dances; a Senegalese man with a golden voice, Faada Freddy; the very young singer Pomme, who recently visited us for a series of concerts in Quebec. And then Gabriel Yacoub, founder in 1973 of the iconic French folk group Malicorne. Vagabonde was recorded at his house in the country.
