Youssou N´Dour - Dakar-Kingston - 2010

Youssou N´Dour, one of the most well-known Senegalese singers and composers worldwide, surprises us in 2010 with Dakar-Kingston. A self-confessed admirer of Bob Marley, he has recorded revisions of old and recent songs to the rhythm of reggae, resulting in surprising work if we take into account that Youssou is the master of mbalax music. In fact, the emblematic rhythm of the island of Jamaica has a similar origin to the Senegalese mbalax, if we take into account the rhythms carried by the African population forced to travel.

Produced by Marley's old friend and Wailers member Tyrone Downie, Youssou N'Dour is surrounded by the best: Earl "China" Smith on guitar, Patrice Bart-Williams and singer Ayo, legendary reggae band Morgan Heritage. , and Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) composing the first theme titled "Marley".

Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita - Clychau Dibon - 2013

The most famous harpist in Wales, Catrin Finch, has combined her mastery with the virtuosity of Seckou Keita's Senegalese kora to record Clychau Dibon (2013), a beautiful instrumental album in which the Mandingo music of West Africa and the old melodies converge from Wales. Finch and Keita have accepted the difficult challenge of combining two musical cultures creating a sublime, coherent, relevant and totally new work.
Catrin Finch is one of the most important harpists of recent years and, surely, the artist who has done the most to raise the appreciation of this instrument among the general public. Fascinated by the harp from an early age (especially when learning about the interpretations of the Spanish Marisa Robles), Catrin has played all over the world alone, along with the best orchestras (The Royal Philharmonic, The New York Philharmonic and The Boston Pops ) or with great artists, and one of his great achievements, to date, has been his complete version of Bach's Goldberg Variations. But in recent times, without completely abandoning classical music, Catrin has begun to flirt with other styles collaborating, for example, with the Colombian group Cimarrón or with the kora teacher Toumani Diabaté.
Seckou Keita is known as "the Jimi Hendrix of the kora". Born in Senegal into a family of griots (the Cissokhos) and a descendant of the Mandingo king SundiataKeita, he distinguishes himself from other musicians in his own inimitably sounds, becoming one of today's most innovative and creative kora players. In fact, in his curriculum he has, among other works, the delicious The Silimbo Passage (2008, with his quintet) and Miro (2012), a lyrical journey through the continents with contributions from artists from Senegal, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Cuba , Colombia, Madagascar, Guinea, Mali and Spain.
The harp occupies a central place in the incredibly rich cultures of West Africa and Wales, and the two nations share a centuries-old tradition of oral history expressed through music, song, and verse. The remarkable affinities between the harp and the kora merge in this album Clychau Dibon, edited by Astar Artes and produced by John Hollis, a true marvel in which African rhythms are fused with Celtic melodies and vice versa, together with original compositions written by Keita. All a joy for the ears and the spirit.

The Touré-Raichel Collective - The Tel Aviv Session - 2012

VieuxFarkaTouré, often called "the Hendrix of the Sahara" (from Mali, son of the great AlíFarkaTouré) and IdanRaichel (from Israel), two virtuosos of music from such disparate environments, have joined their creative forces to give life and form to a improvisation masterpiece, The Tel Aviv Session (2012).
The collaboration was forged after a chance encounter at an airport in Germany. The great friendship that arose between them led them to play together at the Tel Aviv Opera House in November 2010. After that extraordinary concert, Vieux and Idan joined Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian calabash instrumentalistSouleymaneKane, and spent time playing together in a small private studio in Tel Aviv. The resulting sessions, conceived in acoustics, spontaneously, entirely improvised, dazzling with beauty, could only be described as magical. By then, TheTouré-RaichelCollective had just been born.
The eleven tracks of the album stand out for the beauty of an intuitively basted sound. Although the phenomenon of the fusion of musical styles is one of the features of current music, collaborations do not always end in sound understanding. However, this project is understood from the mutual respect for the musical roots of each one. Raichel is stripped of the lush pop arrangements that characterize his music, improvising with chromatic chords from Touré's guitar chords. For its part, the rhythm section plays a vital role in the hypnosis that this album produces.
Singer Cabra Casey, an Israeli of Ethiopian origin and a member of TheIdanRaichel Project, sings and writes the lyrics in the Ethiopian Tigrit language of the song "Ane Nahatka." Another member of TheIdanRaichel Project, YankeleSegal, plays the Persian tar in "Kfar". Mark Eliyahu, who immigrated to Israel from the Russian Republic of Dagestan, adds the sound of kamanche (Azerbaijani violin) to "Alem." The French virtuoso of the harmonica FrédéricYonnet adds his interpretation to the bluesy sound of "Touré". And Vieux adds his vocals to the song "Alkataou" in conjunction with his friend bassist Patrick Ruffino.
In short, a musical jewel where transculturality triumphs.
