Judy Mowatt - Only A Woman - 1982 - Jamaica

Judy Mowatt is a renowned reggae singer. Mowatt's musical career began with the revival of The Gaylettes, a group that ended up becoming one of the island's benchmarks at the end of the 1960s. From this first stage, the songs Silent River Runs Deep, the band's first national success, Take a Chance On Me and numerous coppers by American soul and R&B bands such as Stevie Wonder, Dusty Springfield or Young Rascals, should be highlighted. The sudden departure of the other two members of The Gaylettes, Beryl Lawson and Merle Clemenson, left Judy in the lurch, while totally free to start, although not for long, her solo career. At this time she records numerous covers of American groups and two new hits under the pseudonym Julianne: In Paradise and The Gardener.

Two years later, in 1974, Judy teamed up with Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths to form the I-Threes. The group reaps very good reviews and Marley, who was looking for a replacement in the choirs of The Wailers after the departure of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, adds them to his band to collaborate on his albums.

Her contact with the King of Reggae caused Mowatt to adopt the Rastafari doctrine and join the Twelve Tribes of Israel. As a result of this change, compositions such as Black Woman, Many Are Called and Slave Queen were born, which will form part of her second solo LP: Black Woman.

Highly recommended work by Judy Mowatt. Beautiful high register of voice and some gospel phrasing denote this download of experience and learning by Judy.

Bombino - Agadez - 2011

The music of the Tuareg guitarist Omara "Bombino" Moctar perfectly represents his hometown, Agadez (Niger): located in the middle of the great Sahara desert, it was for centuries a meeting point for nomadic camel caravans. And so is Bombino's music, a meeting of sounds where his influences are cited, from Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré to Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page.

Much of Bombino's music was born in response to the violent repression perpetrated by Nigerian government forces against the Tuareg to quell the pro-independence revolts they staged. In fact, Bombino had to go into exile for many years to escape repression. His compositions emerge from that experience and his overcoming: the powerful notes that spring from his electric guitar capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion, and recall others like Tinariwen or Ali Farka Touré.

Tribute album to his hometown, Agadez (2011), edited by Cumbancha, has been recorded in two very different locations. One was in a studio in the United States and the other includes part of a live performance in the city that gives the album its title. The songs appear mixed on the disc and it is not specified which is recorded in the comfort of a studio or in the Saharan desert, but it is enough to listen to the songs to quickly realize where each one comes from. The songs recorded in the USA show a shy and restrained Bombino, while the ones recorded live give off an electrifying energy. There are "Tar Hani", "Kammou Taliat" or "Iyat Idounia Ayasahen".

Very high level repetitive music that catches you from the beginning, in Agadez you can hear some of the most captivating riffs of today. Absolutely magical.

Ayub Ogada - Kodhi - 2015

Ayub Ogada is one of Kenya's finest musicians, an intimate singer and exponent of the nyatiti lyre who has enjoyed an extraordinary career. In the 1980s he was busking on the London Underground. He subsequently caught the attention of Peter Gabriel's Real World, recorded the (considered a classic) album En Mana Kuoyo in 1993, and opened for Gabriel on his European tour.

He now resides back in Kenya, where he recorded this new album Kodhi (2015) with producer and guitarist Trevor Warren who, in 2012, moved in with a mobile crew to do the recording. Ogada likes to perform outdoors, and is accompanied by a small group who add guitars, bass and percussion (Dudley Phillips and Hossam Ramzy), along with the ambient sounds that are picked up on the recordings. A set that results in an exquisite relaxation with sections that sound like a happy rehearsal or a jam session, where his gently hypnotic voice stands out along with the solo riffs of his beloved lyre. A long-awaited effort that possesses the same transparent simplicity that made their previous record a staple of world music compilations since 1993.

Youssou N´Dour - Egypt - 2004

Egypt has been the most ambitious and controversial project of Youssou N´Dour. If he had so far fused African rhythms with Western melodies, on this album he embarks on a journey through Senegal's Sufi tradition accompanied by the Egyptian and Arabic orchestral arrangements of the Fathly Salama orchestra. Egypt is a song to the tolerance of Senegalese Islam and to the musical encounter between black Africa and the Middle East.

Egypt's repertoire sounds thanks to the combination of Senegalese percussion and Egyptian instruments (magruna, doholla, sagat, kawala) and Arabs (rababa, oud). The string arrangements sublimate some songs, already beautiful in themselves. The result is superb. From the initial greeting of "Allah" to the farewell "Touba – Daru Salaam", the musical pilgrimage that Youssou N'Dour proposes between Dakar and Cairo demonstrates that the evolution of popular music, which has its roots in the villages, He does not understand globalization or invasions but rather dialogue and respect, emphasizing over and over again the importance of what he loves: a humanist Islam.

As the quote from Mamadou Dia, which closes the album's libretto, points out: "Love, in Islam, is not intellectual but visceral."

Egypt was a Grammy Award in 2005 for "Best Contemporary World Music Album".

Teofilo Chantre - Mestissage - 2011

Metissage is the sixth studio album by Teófilo Chantré, one of Cape Verde's greatest composers and author of many of the hits of Cesária Évora, the diva with bare feet. The songs, almost all sung in French and Portuguese Creole, deviate from custom and go in search of a generous musical fusion.

It was on the album Miss Perfumado by Cesária Évora (an album released in 1992 that would establish her internationally) that the name of Teófilo Chantré, the first representative of the Cape Verdean saudade (sodade), appeared for the first time for the general public. A music that was halfway between bossa nova, morna, coladeira and bolero. In this way he created his own style and his solo recordings appeared: Terra & Cretcheu (1994), Di Alma (1997), Rodatempo (2000), Azulando (2004) and Viajá (2007).

On this sixth album, Chantré has opened up to new influences, once again showing us his skill at turning melancholy into song. His music is still rooted in languid coladeiras and bittersweet mornas -immersed in the sweet pain of nostalgia that is saudade-, but like other great Cape Verdean artists (including Mário Lúcio and Mayra Andrade), Teófilo Chantré this time he looks to Brazil, finding in French (Marc Estève is the author of several of the lyrics) a new way to express saudade. A jewel full of sophistication and Atlantic melancholy.

Ondatrópica - Ondatrópica - 2012

Ondatrópica (2012) is a project by the Colombian musician Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero) and the English producer Will "Quantic" Holland, bringing together top musicians who represent the old and new guard of Colombian music. In addition to cumbia, Ondatrópica appeals to the traditional flavors of joint, merengue, bagpipes and champeta, and combines them with funk, hip-hop and even electronic flights of dub.

After several years of working around Colombian tropical music, Mario Galeano and Will Quantic (with the support of the British Council) managed to make their project a reality: to reinterpret Colombia's tropical musical heritage with new approaches in composition, arrangements and production. To do this, at the beginning of 2012, in the legendary Discos Fuentes studio in Medellín (with more than 75 years of history) they called the members of their respective groups (Front Cumbiero and Combo Bárbaro). Fruko (soul and life of the Tesos) and Jorge Gaviria, Aníbal Velasquez, Pedro Ramayá, Alfredito Linares, Juancho Vargas, Michi Sarmiento, Markitos Mikolta, Wilson Viveros and Armando Hernández, joined young artists such as Nidia Góngora, Freddy Colorado, Eblis Álvarez, Anita Tijoux (known Chilean rapper), José Miguel Vega "El Profe", Carlos Puello "Chongo", Esteban Copete, Pedro Ojeda, Marco Fajardo, Wilfredo Peña and Fernando "Ovejo" Silva, in an unprecedented project in history of Colombian music, a return to the standards of sound and musical quality that for decades were among the most influential on the continent.

The exploration with these pioneering and visionary musicians of the 60s, 70s and 80s of the 20th century does not seek a nostalgic approach to their sound, the idea is to reaffirm its validity and contemporaneity. To do this, they approached the classic production standards by means of equipment and techniques typical of analog sound, using vintage consoles and microphones, and taking advantage of the experience of key figures in sound such as the legendary engineer and producer Mario Rincón, one of those responsible for of the best recordings of the 70s in the country.

The result: that the most forceful and relevant of Colombian music is here to be rediscovered.

Merl Saunders - Blues from the Rainforest

This album has been a spiritual adventure", thus begins the explanatory text about "Blues from the rainforest" signed by Merl Saunders himself in the booklet, and there we also discover that the percussionist Muruga had a lot to do with the inspiration for the The most new age project of this black keyboard player, Saunders, born in California in 1934, made this album aware that he could do something to make people aware of the enormous crime that the devastation of the Amazon represents for the planet. Sting's charisma, he did have the right inspiration to carry out this project that he published on his own label, Sumertone Records, in 1990.

Another of the great achievements of the album was obtaining the collaboration of Jerry García, the former guitarist of the Grateful Dead, who died five years after the publication of this work.
