Odetta - Christmas Spirituals

 


Christmas Spirituals is the name of two albums recorded by American folk singer Odetta. The first was released in 1960 on Vanguard Records. The second, a new recording of nearly all the same songs, produced by Rachel Faro at White Crowe Audio in Burlington, Vermont, was originally released in 1987 on Alcazar Records and was reissued digitally in 2007 on Ashe Records. Both albums feature Bill Lee, Spike Lee's father on double bass.

Putumayo Presents - A Jazz & Blues Christmas

 


Jazz and blues have had their share of Christmas recordings over the years, and Christmas jazz can easily work alongside Christmas blues, which is what happens at Putumayo Presents: Jazz & Blues Christmas. This Christmas-oriented compilation has one foot in jazz and the other foot in blues; The ten-track CD is quite diverse, from vocal jazz in Canadian singer Emilie-Claire Barlow's playful rendition of "Santa Baby" to electric urban blues in B.B. King. Many of the tracks combine elements of jazz and blues, including Charles Brown's "Santa's Blues", Topsy Chapman's and Lars Edegran's cover of "The Christmas Blues" by Lars Edegran, and the arrangement of Dukes of Dukes of "Merry Christmas, Baby." Dixieland.

An exceptional gathering of musicians from around the global village set a new standard for Christmas records on World Christmas. The wonderful variety of songs resonate with love of the season, and there isn't a novelty tune to be heard. From Africa come Cesaria Evora, Angelique Kidjo, Papa Wemba, and Lokua Kanza, all bearing gifts of heartfelt music. The jazz world cooks up a feast, with delectable chestnuts from Joshua Redman, Marcus Miller, Dianne Reeves, Mino Cinelu, John Scofield, the Wild Magnolias, and the Caribbean Jazz Project. The Latin sound is present with Ruben Blades, Yomo Toro, Dave Valentin, the Gipsy Kings, and the gifted Cuban a cappella group Vocal Sampling. Brazil sends the angelic voices of Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Eliane Elias; and India's Zakir Hussain adds spice to "We Three Kings."
